A number of studies have highlighted the similarities between brain tumor stem cells (BTSC) and neural stem cells (NSC), both at the molecular and functional level. Thus understanding the basic molecular mechanisms that regulate maintenance of NSCs might enlighten us on possible strategies to disrupt growth and/or maintenance of BTSC. Our entry point into this question is the Eph/ephrin cell-cell signaling pathway which plays a role in neurogenesis. The framework of our project is that in addition to controlling cell adhesion and migration, Eph/ephrin signaling could influence other biological processes such as cell fate decisions and tumorigenesis which are relevant to tumor biology.
