Among the 66 projects selected by the European Research Council, Anthony Henras and the EukaRiBio group (MCD-CBI) is the winner of one of 13 CNRS projects awarded an ‘ERC Synergy Grant 2025’ and one of four CNRS projects in biology.

These six-year grants, worth up to €10 million, are intended to enable groups of two to four scientists from member or associate countries to ‘tackle some of the world’s most challenging research problems, spanning multiple scientific disciplines.

The EukaRiBio group will therefore collaborate with the groups of Roland Beckmann (Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Germany), Sarah Woodson (Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA) and Brigitte Pertschy (University of Graz, Austria), who will coordinate the snoOPERA project aimed at defining the hidden functions of snoRNPs in ribosome assembly.

Ribosome assembly is a universal process necessary for the growth of all living beings. This mechanism relies on the coordinated action of hundreds of small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein particles (snoRNPs), which ensure fine regulation of ribosome production. Recently, the snoOPERA research consortium discovered that a specific class of snoRNPs plays a central but underestimated role in the early stages of ribosome assembly. In this context, the consortium will aim to define the functions of these particular snoRNPs, integrating recent advances in genetics, biochemistry, cryo-electron microscopy and molecular biophysics.
