How do animal groups adjust their collective behavior in response to sudden changes in their environment? Guy Theraulaz, Guozheng Lin, Ramón Escobedo, Xu Li, Tingting Xue (CRCA-CBI) and their colleagues have shown that groups of fish subjected to environmental stress modulate their social interactions in order to self-organize into critical states that promote their adaptability.
